GTA 6 Map Size: Everything We Know About Vice City's Open World

CATEGORY: MAPS & LOCATIONS — PUBLISHED MAY 1, 2026

Grand Theft Auto VI is set in Leonida, a fictional version of Florida that encompasses Vice City and its surrounding areas. Based on everything Rockstar has shown and independent analysis of trailer footage, the GTA 6 map represents the largest and most detailed open world the studio has ever created.

The Scale of Leonida

Leonida stretches from the urban sprawl of Vice City through swamplands, small towns, and coastal areas all the way to a chain of islands inspired by the Florida Keys. Early estimates from the community, based on vehicle travel times observed in trailer footage and the visible geography, suggest the map could be three to four times larger than GTA V's San Andreas.

But size alone doesn't tell the full story. What makes GTA 6's map truly revolutionary is its density. Nearly every building in Vice City's urban core is enterable. NPCs follow complex daily routines. Weather systems dynamically reshape the landscape. Construction projects progress over time, physically changing the city as you play.

Vice City's Urban Core

The downtown area is a forest of glass and steel, with skyscrapers that dwarf anything in Los Santos. Ocean Beach returns with its iconic art deco architecture, now rendered in stunning detail with neon signs that reflect off rain-slicked streets. Little Havana pulses with Latin music and street vendors, while the port district hums with industrial activity.

The Everglades and Rural Leonida

Beyond the city limits, GTA 6's map transforms dramatically. The Grassrivers region — a stand-in for the Everglades — is a maze of waterways, mangroves, and swamp that requires airboats to navigate. Small towns scattered throughout the countryside each have their own character, economy, and criminal elements.

Underwater Content

GTA 6's underwater world is more expansive than any previous Rockstar game. The warm Caribbean waters surrounding Vice City and the Keys contain coral reefs, shipwrecks, underwater caves, and marine wildlife. Several missions and collectibles require diving beneath the surface.

How It Compares

GTA V's map was roughly 49 square miles. Red Dead Redemption 2 offered about 29 square miles of denser terrain. GTA 6's Leonida is estimated at 150 to 200 square miles when including underwater areas — but every square mile packs more content than any previous entry.

The map also evolves over time through a living world system. New businesses open, construction finishes, seasonal events change decorations, and the consequences of major story events are visible throughout the world.
